The Indonesian Javanese "Gunungan Wayang" Lantern

Gunungan Wayang is a symbolic puppet used in Javanese wayang kulit performances, representing the universe and the cyclical nature of life. It symbolizes the cosmic tree, connecting the heavens and the earth, and embodies elements of purification, growth, and spiritual connection. In Indonesian Art and Culture, Gunungan marks the beginning and end of the wayang kulit performance, symbolizing the creation and dissolution of the world within the play.

Before we go to the step-by-step instructions, let's gather all the necessary materials. Here’s what you will need:

  • 3mm MDF board
  • Laser cutting/engraver machine
  • Remote RGB Led Light Bulb
  • Wood glue
  • Light plug with cable
  • Transparent art paper
  • Ruler and cutting knife
  • Cutting mat
  • Double-side tape

Step 1: Cutting 3mm MDF Board

The first step is cutting the MDF Board with laser engraver/cutting machine. I use a diode laser and Laser GRBL software to create this lantern. Here is the original design.

Laser GRBL Setting:

  • Parameters : Brightness 95, Contrast 110, White Clip 0
  • Conversation tool : Vectorize
  • Don't forget to click the auto trim image
  • Image size and position : 395mm x 295mm
  • Speed and laser power options depend on your own laser cutting model.

You can also customize the top of the lantern using your own creativity, such as engrave your brand logo or put some motivational words that can inspire other people. I left the top blank in the design to give space of creativity of any inspiring people.

Step 2: Cut the transparent paper and stick on every side of "The Gunungan Wayang"

After cutting out the pieces, use ruler and cutting knife to cut the transparent paper according to the side size of "The Gunungan Wayang". Cut the transparent paper with the size  8.5cm x 15cm for every side. You need 4 pieces to cover all side. Next, use the double-side tape and stick it on the border of "The Gunungan Wayang" that has been cut. I use 0.5cm double-side tape, small enough.

After sticking the double-side tape on every side of "The Gunungan Wayang", now you can continue to stick the transparent paper on every side of the cutting. Also install cable with light plug at the bottom of the lantern.

Step 3: Assembly and test the remote RGB Light bulb

Next you can start to assembly all of the cut pieces, also install the RGB light bulb. Before assembling it completely, check again the electricity and make sure the light can turn on.

Step 4: Displaying Your Lamp

The Javanese "Gunungan Wayang" Lantern is now ready to illuminate your room. Place it on a bedside table, shelf, or any spot that needs a touch of warmth and charm. Enjoy the soft, ambient light that your handmade creation provides.

Hopefully, this can inspire your day and keep you enthusiastic about creating another inspirational art. Thank You.
